Curiosity Unleashed: Girls Unlocking STEM is a fun filled day where you get to see what it’s like to be a biologist, geologist, and more! Come meet actual women working in STEM fields and learn about all the amazing careers and opportunities that you can pursue. Each girl will get to choose 3 workshops when they sign in for the event (a few example workshops are below). Each workshop is run by a professional in their field and focuses on hands-on activities and of course having fun. During the provided lunch girls will get to casually chat with undergraduate students and professional women in STEM from Mercyhurst University.
 

Drop Off Time: 10:00 am – 10:30 am 

Pick Up Time: 3:00 pm – 3:30 pm 

Event Location: Mercyhurst University, Erie, PA

Eligible Participants: Girls in grades 6-8 (if you have a question about eligibility feel free to reach out)

Cost: $10 covers lunch and activity supplies

Get ready for an exciting hands-on activity with our blood typing activity! Today, you'll be discovering the fascinating science behind how our blood types work and why they're so important. Using real-life lab techniques, you'll learn how to test different blood samples and identify their types. Who knows, you might uncover the mystery of blood compatibility and how it impacts things like blood donation! Are you ready to dive into this challenge with curiosity and excitement as you unlock a world of knowledge?

Fossil Finders
In this fun and interactive session, you will become a paleontologist for the day! We will learn about the fossils that can be found in Erie and the surrounding areas and how to identify them. Then we'll practice the skills of safely removing and cleaning the fossils that we find in rocks. You'll even get to go home with your very own fossil!

Girls Who Decode: Unlocking the Strawberry’s Secret Code!
Have you ever wondered what makes a strawberry a strawberry? In this hands-on activity, you’ll be the scientist extracting actual DNA from a strawberry using simple lab tools and everyday ingredients. You’ll mash, mix, and discover the tiny instruction manual found inside all living things—DNA! Along the way, you’ll learn how scientists use DNA to solve problems, make discoveries, and change the world!
